Hybrid Battery Health on Japanese Imports: What to Check Before You Buy

In short: Toyota and Honda hybrid batteries commonly last well beyond 200,000 km, and most Japanese auction hybrids have covered far less. For a pure EV such as the Nissan Leaf, the battery's state of health is the single most important check.

Self-charging hybrids (Aqua, Prius, Fit, C-HR, Vezel)

• The hybrid battery is designed to last the life of the car in normal use. Irish taxis regularly pass 300,000 km on original Prius batteries.
• Mileage matters less than age and use. A low-mileage car used for short trips is usually fine.
• Warning signs are an engine that runs constantly, poor economy, or a hybrid warning light.
• If a battery is ever needed, reconditioned and new units are widely available in Ireland.

Plug-in hybrids (Outlander PHEV, Prius PHV, RAV4 PHV)

Electric range falls as the battery ages. Ask for the battery capacity reading where the auction or dealer provides it.

Electric cars (Nissan Leaf)

Always ask for the state of health (SOH). On a Leaf it is shown as capacity bars on the dash (12 is full), or measured with a diagnostic tool. Treat anything below about 9 bars with caution. We request battery information on EVs before you bid.
